Front of GVFD Museum
The Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department Museum was established in 1969 at the old freight station behind Greensburg City Hall. Now in our fourth location, the museum was a dream of Greensburg firefighters dating back to the late 1950s. With the support of the community and the Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department, we will preserve our history for future generations.

Collection Highlights

The Pat Lyon (1805)

Built in 1805 in Philadelphia, the Pat Lyon was then transported over the Allegheny mountains all the way to Pittsburgh, entering service as that city’s first fire engine. In 1852, the city of Greensburg purchased the Pat Lyon, where it helped fight our city’s fires until 1904. That means this fire engine predates the establishment of the Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department by nearly 40 years. Following the end of its service life, the Pat Lyon was quartered outside of Hose Co. 3, where years of exposure to the elements and the passage of time deteriorated the ancient engine even further. In the late 1990s the museum raised funds to restore this engine to its original condition and moved it into the museum, where it remains today.

The Goodwill (1825)

The Goodwill was built in 1825 in Pittsburgh’s North Side (back when the North Side was known as Allegheny City). This engine arrived in Greensburg shortly after our first engine, the Pat Lyon, in the early 1850s. It was quartered at Hose Co. #2 (near The Palace Theatre) until 1904. After the end of its service life, the Goodwill was quartered at Hose Co. #6, where the effects of
Pennsylvania’s weather deteriorated it. In the 1990s, the Goodwill was restored to its original 19th century condition and placed in the museum.

Seagrave Pumper (1949)

The 1949 Seagrave Pumper was commissioned for Hose Co # 3 by Captain John Edward “Hutch” Hutchinson, who later became Greensburg’s Fire Chief for over 63 years. The Seagrave was reacquired from Westmoreland County Community College and took 30 years to restore. Today it is driven in parades, ceremonial events, and public service duties.

Mack Pumper (1932)

The Mack Pumper saw service in neighboring Southwest Greensburg.

Charles Horan Model Fire Vehicle Room
